Functional measurements of EDV and ESV show that the MM hydrogel is able to preserve LV volumes for up to 4 weeks after injection in a small animal model of CHF. This shows the material is capable of preventing further negative LV remodeling in a chronic environment, in addition to having previously shown efficacy in subacute models of MI. These differences suggest the MM hydrogel induces a pro-repair response in the infarct that may be capable of preventing the progression of heart failure to later stages. This would greatly impact the current quality of life for many heart failure patients and improve their prognosis. While these MRI data are promising, histological and RNAseq analysis is currently being investigated to confirm a regenerative response in the infarct due to MM injection.
