Conclusions: The monofilament P4HB scaffold provides a high initial strength through 12 weeks and gradually loses strength and Mw over 52 weeks. The scaffold is rapidly in-grown with native tissue that remodels into a strong collagenous tissue over time. As the scaffold gradually degrades, the in-grown tissue matures and remodels to assume the load bearing function of the scaffold. The neo-tissue formed is composed primarily of mature collagen fibers with infiltrating blood vessels. As such, the P4HB resorbable scaffold provides a matrix for tissue regeneration and promotes the in-growth of native tissue that can provide long-term support beyond the degradation of the polymeric scaffold.
