Simulation of Nacelle Stall and Engine Response

Performance, efficiency, operational costs, and environmental friendliness are important parameters in the design of modern transport airplanes and their engines. However, flight safety issues are not allowed to be compromised in any case. In this context it is of particular importance to know the performance of transport airplanes at the boundaries of the flight envelope. Since experimental flight testing is expensive and very often associated with high risk, the progress in numerical simulation in the context of aircraft development as well flight testing offers new perspectives to gain better knowledge and to improve design capabilities. The research unit "Simulation of Wing and Nacelle Stall" (FOR 1066), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), Airbus, and Rolls-Royce Deutschland, is committed to make significant contributions in this field. It is the objective of the research group to enhance scientific knowledge and methods for high-quality simulations of outer aerodynamics and driven nacelles at the boundaries of the flight envelope. The research activities and results related to aircraft nacelle stall and its interaction with the jet engine will be presented in this overview paper.
