Bioenergy plays an important role in future energy production. In Finland the use of wood chips is increasing rapidly. However, as there is a high amount of competition in the wood industry in Finland and the collection strategy is an important strategic decision for power plants, it is important to make an informed decision using advanced tools. Due to high volumes even minor cost benefits can have large benefits. In this study a simulation model is provided which can be used to estimate the cost structures of various kinds of wood chip supply chains. The model uses data from a geographical information system, which enables accurate estimates about the cost structures. By utilizing advanced containers in wood chip supply chains it is possible to decrease costs by almost 20%.
