In this paper a novel approach is proposed for faulted phase selection in transmission lines. This new approach is based on adaptive cumulative sum method which is proposed by authors. In this method, adaptive cumulative sum-based algorithm (ACUSUM) is applied to each phase current and pre-defined indices are obtained. It is shown that by monitoring these output indices and comparing them with an appropriate threshold, faulted phases can be detected, only 4 ms after fault inception. This new faulted phase selector can be also applied to double circuit transmission lines in order to detect cross-faults as well as inter-circuit faults. The implementation of the proposed method is simple and need no complicated hardware and equipment.
