The increasing quantity of the smartphones and their embedded sensors result in the increasing number of applications developed to serve users need. These applications require a solution to exchange their desired data. Although there are currently many types of wireless communication, these networks rely on infrastructure and cannot be scaled to support for incoming enormous requirement in internet of things era. Therefore, a phone to phone communication is a crucial part in the opportunistic network that devices can directly communicate with each other. Unfortunately, WiFi ad-hoc is unavailable in most of smartphones in the market unless being modified. In this paper, we propose a mechanism which utilize an existing hotspot mode of smart devices to create a virtual ad-hoc communication. The proposed mechanism will adaptively switch connection mode of the smartphones using node density information to reduce the excess of the hotspot which help lengthen system life time. The performance evaluation show that our algorithm can provide delivery ratio and average delay close to the best configuration of previous algorithm while reduce the energy consumption up to 65%.
