Practical Pilot Pattern Design for Sparse OFDM Channel Estimation

This paper investigates the pilot pattern design for sparse channel estimation in OFDM system based on mutual coherence theory of compressed sensing. Instead of forming a cyclic difference set or almost difference set, we propose a practical method to design pilot pattern. The proposed method first searches the pilot pattern randomly. Then, the pilot pattern is iteratively refined by selecting a better one from two candidates, where each is obtained by individually replacing each element of an index set with a better pilot position index from two directions. Simulation results show that the proposed method is superior to existing methods in terms of reconstruction probability, normalized mean square error and bit error rate.
