The theory of compressive sensing (CS) has inspired the concept of a compressive direction-finding (DF) antenna array where N antenna elements are combined into M measurements before sampling with expected performance similar to that of a conventional N-element array, given that the number of directions of arrival (DoAs) is sufficiently small. The use of random Gaussian sensing matrices in designing such an array has previously been proposed. The use of codebooks with numerically optimised coherence in designing a compressive array is proposed as an alternative, and is shown to result in better performance for a system with few receivers.
