For the grade EN-GJS-400-18-LT, in a 9 Tn part various tests were performed with Tundish cover method and cored wire method. In the case of tundish cover treatment cast iron has been treated with FeSiMg master alloy containing about 6% of magnesium; for the cored wire treatment the magnesium content has been about 37%. Differences in chemical composition, magnesium recovery and mechanical properties were studied. Moreover, the graphitizing tendency of the iron was investigated, comparing the number of nodules and parameters of the thermal analysis. It is believed that the tundish ladle process has a higher graphitization tendency than the cored wire process. However no significant differences were observed in number of nodules, either in mechanical properties.
