Ram-up Sleeve Application to DISAMATIC Moulding Lines

There is a continuous trend in the foundry market to produce cast parts with thinner wall sections and more complex designs. The result is castings which have more isolated sections which need to be fed. Whilst it is now common practice to use highly exothermic spot feeders to address these feed requirements on horizontal greensand moulding lines, until now there have been limitations in applying this technology to vertically parted moulds. Current technology typically relies upon side feeders and the use of metal padding to reach such isolated sections, which results in both reduced yield and increased cleaning costs. This paper describes the development and optimisation of a ram-up sleeve technology using a patented collapsible metal core design, which can be located and moulded in situ on the swing plate of the DISAMATIC moulding line. Automation of this process enables the commercial application of ram-up exothermic spot feeders to vertically parted greensand moulds.
