In this research, a model has been developed to identify the key factors that trigger off therickshaw drivers to violate traffic directions in heterogeneous traffic conditions and toquantify the relative influence of these factors. The data used for the model developmentincludes information collected from a stated-preference (SP) survey. In the survey, eachdriver was presented with 24 hypothetical traffic scenarios and asked to state their lane-usagedecisions in each case. The detailed survey was conducted among 30 drivers with differentage and experience levels of driving rickshaws in Dhaka city and discrete choice models havebeen developed using the 720 observations. Results indicate that the probabilities of lane10usage violation are affected by characteristics of rickshaw drivers (e.g. age and experience) aswell as attributes of roadway (e.g. presence of medians) and traffic (e.g. level of congestion).The developed model, when plugged in microscopic traffic simulators, will be useful formore realistic prediction of non-motorized vehicle movements in heterogeneous trafficstreams.
