摘要

Improving the safety of pedestrians at intersections is still a very demanding issue. Althoughseveral types of safety countermeasures as reforming intersection layouts have beenimplemented, methods to evaluate the effects of these countermeasures quantitatively before theinstallation are not yet established. One of the main issues regarding pedestrian safety is conflictswith turning vehicles. This paper aims at developing an integrated model to represent thevariations in the maneuver of left-turners at signalized intersections considering the reaction tointersection geometry and crossing pedestrians dynamically. The proposed methodology containsseveral stochastic sub-models which are empirically developed. This integrated modelincorporates path model, free-flow speed profile model, gap acceptance model andstopping/clearing speed profile model. Considering that the safety assessment is the main targetbehind the proposed model, this study uses Post Encroachment Time (PET) and vehicle speed atthe crosswalk as validation parameters. Preliminary validation results by Monte Carlo simulationshows that the proposed integrated model can realistically represent the variations in vehiclemaneuvers as well as the distribution of PET and vehicles speed at crosswalk.
