This article describes fundamentals for an impact assessment of an environment-responsive trafficcontrol. This road traffic control supports the needs of mobility as well as the needs of environmentalprotection, by selecting control measures under consideration of the current situation of traffic andenvironment. Yet, for an optimal selection of measures this traffic control has to assess the impact ofmeasures quite precisely. The following contribution describes an empiric statistical approach withhigh quality local data to assess the short term (minutes) and midterm (hours) effects of traffic controlmeasures on pollution levels of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides.The approach uses high-resolution input data of traffic and meteorological parameters in orderto consider appropriately the influence of volatile parameters such as traffic flow and traffic volume.A regression model is used to describe measured roadside pollution concentrations and to assess theinfluence of the different input variables. With the quantified influence of traffic-related inputvariables, the reduction potential is estimated.The article closes with potential investigation areas to improve the developed modelingapproach and with recommendations for data collection and data processing regarding an integratedenvironment-responsive traffic control.
