ACHIEVEMENTS OF HX PROGRAMME ON MATURATION-DEMONSTRATION OF NEW KEY CRYOGENIC TECHNOLOGIES

Since 2007, CNES has initiated a technological programme HX, mainly focusing on technologies useful forfuture re-ignitable upper stages with new coasting phases in orbit up to 6 hours or even more. Firstpossible application is on A5ME upper stage. HX technological programme has been organised as follows:1) HXT: Technologies development and testing at component and subsystem level in order to reach TRL4.Main results have already been presented. Yet a dedicated complementary activity on adaptation ofcamera and level sensors, for possible flight implementation in Ariane 5 ESCA LH2 tank, in order tovalidate key technologies fields as Propellant Thermal Management and their behaviour in microgravityduring ballistic phases, will be presented.2) A macro demonstrator HXG, integrating HXT enhanced technologies and aiming to demonstrate TRL6for each technologies as well as interactions. HXG development is completed. 7 tests sequences havebeen performed in different conditions in order to cover 164 technologies validation objectives, with about300 measurements. HXG consists in 2 elongated Ariane ESCA RLOX tanks separated by an insulatedorthogrid common bulkhead which is also a part of the demonstration. These tanks of 2.6m in diameterhave been filled with LH2 for the upper one, whereas the lower one has received both LH2 and LN2cryogenic fluids. The total height of the demonstrator is about 10 m when installed in the vacuum testchamber. HXG has tested about 12 innovative technologies in representative environment on ground andin altitude simulation with solar fluxes simulation. System aspects through interstages cavities have beenpart of these objectives. This paper will concentrate on the HXG macrodemonstrator test campaign, themain results of exploitation and the technologies expertise.The HX programme is managed by the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). The industrial team isled by AIR LIQUIDE and involves CRYOSPACE. HXG on ground demonstrator is assembled and tested inAIR LIQUIDE facilities.
