Near-earth space is becoming increasingly congested, and effective methods and technologies must be developedto address both the safety and operational implications of this issue. Numerous studies have assessed methods thatcould effectively mitigate orbital debris, but no demonstration of the efficacy of a particular method has beenundertaken. True demonstration of orbital debris removal has been hindered by estimated costs; some estimatesreach almost $1 billion. Therefore, a high technology readiness level (TRL) demonstration of actual orbital debrisremoval is needed. Dynetics is leveraging a successful industry/Government partnership established during the jointNational Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and U.S. Air Force STP-26 mission to develop a debrisremoval demonstration for less than $150 million, to be initiated and completed within 36 months. Dynetics' focuswill demonstrate that such a vital mission can be accomplished within tight cost/schedule constraints. Dynetics'flight-proven commercial Fast, Affordable, Science and Technology SATellite (FASTSAT) bus, which is stillcurrently operating on-orbit supporting the STP-26 mission objectives, provides the foundation for thisdemonstration. With its ability to support the necessary nanosatellite deployment, communications capability,proximity sensing, and propulsion to facilitate the debris removal mechanisms, FASTSAT is an ideal mothershipand candidate for this orbital debris removal demonstration. Additionally, the inherent scalability of FASTSATprovides opportunities to address a wider range of debris removal missions. FASTSAT's affordability, coupled withDynetics' ability to manufacture in Huntsville, Alabama, significantly contributes to meeting stringent cost andschedule objectives. Dynetics' approach does not require new development; the concept seeks to integrate proventechnologies. Analysis confirms available capture methods, such as grappling and/or adhesives, meet the objectives.The mission will most likely employ multiple capture methods to gain as much information as possible about theeffectiveness of various technologies. Since FASTSAT has demonstrated the ability to deploy a nanosatellite, thedemonstration will use this important capability in a formation-flying capture activity. In addition, FASTSAT willbe configured with an environmentally "green" propulsion system that is both affordable and operationally effective.
