The issues addressed during the development of this device include microfluidic flow control, chemical compatibility of chamber material, micromachining of thermoplastics, fluid interfaces, sealing the extraction chamber and realization of chemical processes such as dissolution, evaporation and mixing on the microliter scale. Calculations and tests of fluid flow control using micro valves, cryogenic machining using steel and diamond tools as well as modeling and testing of seals will be discussed along with results of LC-MS analysis.
