Biomass is one pillar in renewable energy utilization. In all applications – heat, power and fuel – highconversion efficiency is necessary. Decentralised electricity production in combination with and based on biomassstill finds some difficulties in real applications. There is also a deficit of proven technologies, especially in smallscalegasification and use of producer gas in internal combustion engines. One concept favoured in a recent project isthe connection of a wood chip furnace with a Stirling engine. Because the direct exposure of the Stirling head causesnumerous problems, the solution is sought in designing an indirect heat transfer system. The main challenge is thetemperature level, which should be reached for high electrical efficiencies. Temperatures above 1000°C at thebiomass combustion side are needed for an efficient heat transfer at some 850°C at the Stirling engine like ourmeasurements shows. Measurements on both installations have been conducted and analysed. After this, the designphase is started. However, no final choice on the design has been taken.
