Evaluation of Azimuthal Anchoring Energy for LC Device with Low and High Pretilt Angles Equipped with Color Filter

In this study, we theoretically investigated an influence of the existence of a color filter on the determination of the azimuthal anchoring energy based on the renormalized transmission ellipsometry (RTE). The azimuthal anchoring energy using a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal (LC) cells equipped with/without a color filter were evaluated by means of RTE. The result indicated no influence in the obtained ellipsometric parameters such as the phase difference Δ and the angle of amplitude ratio Ψ, when a color filter was an isotropic medium. Furthermore, almost the same azimuthal anchoring energy between the TN LC cells equipped with/without a color filter can be experimentally obtained in the same manner as RTE. We presented a possibility for the determination of the azimuthal anchoring energy for the commercial liquid crystal display (LCD) products.
