Main goal of the present investigations is to analyze the fundamental mechanisms of flame ignition and stabilization in a cavity flameholder. The present study focuses on nonpremixed flame of hydrocarbon fuel in a supersonic flow. Two flame stabilization regimes were observed in our experiments, i.e., the shear-layer-stabilized flame and the recirculation-zone-stabilized flame. The local equivalence ratio in the shear layer is the key factor of determining the flame ignition, development and the final stabilization. A data-fitted correlation curve of flame ignition and stability limits is given at the end of the paper.
