Research projects like FAMOS and GENEVA show the potential of GNSS as sensor forsafety critical driver assistance systems. However, the current GNSS (GPS and GLONASS)comply with these requirements only partially and Galileo will not be ready for applicationbefore 2014 (2020 full operational). Therefore, it is necessary to combine GNSS with alreadyexisting augmentation systems to fulfill the requested requirements. But also the availabilityof the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) is severely limitedwithin urban areas because of the missing direct line of sight to the geostationary satellites. ARoadside Navigation Station (RSNS) offers the possibility to send additional information overterrestrial connections like UMTS or Car2X-communication. A built in Vehicle NavigationStation (VNS) in the vehicle connects with the RSNS and handles the exchange of data. ThisVNS supports all common technical means of communication.
