Road infrastructure health monitoring: Use of NICT for sustainable development

The recent evolutions undergone by the global climate combined with the relentless increaseof the traffic undermine the world road network. This road network value representsthousands of billions of Euros. The management of this network would be much more effectiveif the road infrastructures could, in real time, communicate to their public or privatemanagers, their state of health. Therefore, there is a need in development of a new generationof road network management tools. The authors present herein the researches focused on thedesign of a system able to perform self-diagnosis of the pavement infrastructure. Thetechnology was first submitted to a one scale experiment on a real road section in 2010. Thistechnology is largely extendable and is able to combine the latest advances regarding the newinformation and communication technologies (wireless communication, energy autonomy,Web-services, low power constituents, programmable electronics, RFID tags) with sensors(strain measurement, temperature…). The authors present the feedback of theexperimentation in order to support the development of this new type of systems.
