Light emission from organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that exploit fluorescent materials have an internal quantum efficiency that is typically limited to no more than 25% due to the creation of non-radiative triplet excited states. Here, we report the use of inter- and intra-molecular charge transfer (CT) system that allow a very high reverse intersystem crossing approaching to 100% between non-radiative triplet and radiative singlet excited states and thus a means of achieving enhanced electroluminescence. OLEDs using inter- and intra-molecular CT system show that very high external quantum efficiencies and we believe that the upconversion technology will dramatically change OLED science and technology.
