A novel design of an exposed antiresonant (AR) nodeless hollow core photonic crystal fiber (NHC-PCF) for gas sensing was proposed, which could enable gas samples to diffuse in or out of the AR NHC-PCF through the open cladding within a very short time. The unique properties of the designed AR NHC-PCF were investigated in detail, such as mode pattern, fraction of power in the central core, confinement loss and response time. The advantages and potential applications of these exposed AR NHC-PCF are discussed.
