摘要

A novel phosphate free bioactive glass (PFBG) composition has been synthesized and was coated on the 316 L SS metallic implant surface (layer 1, thickness: 10-15 μm) basically to prevent/shield the direct contact of the otherwise reactive 316 L SS surface with the surrounding body fluid inhibiting any long term undesirable side effects, as mentioned.Above this, a porous layer (pore size:2-10μm) was developed (layer 2, thickness: 40-50 μm) as a reservoir of antiresorptive drug, release of which improves bone regeneration at the damaged site as well aides in bone-bonding ability of the implant for improved fixation. Hence, a gradient bilayered multifunctional coating of thickness ~70 μm is obtained that has been extensively characterised by XRD, FE-SEM, FUR, Scratch test, in vitro bioassays/bioactivity test as above.
