In vivo testing of silicon-substituted and silicon-adsorbed plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite: Bone-implant contact and endosteal-implant connectivity
We have shown that 0.8 wt% Si substitution or the adsorption of Si to the HA surface made no improvement to the percent bone-implant contact and the number of endosteal connections compared to HA alone. Both HA and Si substituted HA showed superior bone-implant contact compared to Si-adsorbed HA surfaces. Si-HA has shown better performance than HA as a porous bone graft substitute , but here was no benefit as a plasma-sprayed implant coating. These results may be of importance in demonstrating how different forms of bioactive ceramics (i.e. porous granules vs. implant coatings) may affect their in vivo activity.
