We successfully developed a magnetically guided system based on maghemite nanotube for efficient delivery of the insoluble anticancer drug PTX. The rod-like shape facilitated cellular uptake, and the tubular structure possessed a high drug loading capacity. Further investigation demonstrated that these newly devised PMNTs exhibited several advantages: their PEGylation endowed them with a "stealth effect" towards macrophages, the magnetic response greatly increased carcinoma uptake, and this iron oxide-based complex possessed a low pH-activated release profile. Owing to these benefits, PMNTs clearly exhibit promising potential for using as a high-performance insoluble anticancer drug delivery system in clinical applications.
