Type Ⅰ collagen is a potential biomaterial for tissue regeneration and drug delivery. The collagens used for such a purpose has come primarily from bovine or porcine dermis. However, the recent outbreak of infectious diseases common among human beings and domestic animals, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, has resulted in a high demand for a material providing lower risk for these diseases. Recently, type Ⅰ collagens isolated from teleost fishes have served as an alternative collagen source, because no infections common between fish and human beings have been reported. Moreover, the unit-cost of fish collagen is low, as it is derived from fish processing wastes that are very rich in collagen, such as skin and scales (Gomez-Guillen et al., 2002).
