Collagen-chitosan hydrogels can be modified to support both CPC and islet viability. It appears that islet viability is better maintained when they are embedded within the matrix, rather than seeded on top. Therefore, vascularization and 3-D islet-extracellular matrix interactions, such as provided by our matrix scaffold, may be required for optimizing the success of islet transplantation. A better understanding of how materials and cells respond to each other will help towards the goal of improving scaffolds for diabetes therapies.
