In order to understand how cell regulations in hyaluronan hydrogel after vocal fold injury, we have investigated co-culture of normal and scar hVFF with BM-MSC in 3-D Carbylan-GSX. This environment resulted in less MCP-1, IL6, VEGF and TGF-β1 production, and more HGF, collagen and MMP1 expression, especially for scar hVFF. This study revealed MSC in Carbylan-GSX did interact with hVFF, decreasing the inflammatory response and modulating ECM remodeling. This study suggests locally injected MSC with Carbylan-GSX may promote structure and function recovery of the scarred vocal fold.
