Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based programmable logic controller (PLC) has gained increasingly interests for implementing safety critical systems among nuclear power plants. There are several factors contributing to the success: FPGA supports a secure application installation environment, provides products with longer lifetime, improves testability, and reduces the drift which may occur in analog-based system. As one of the leading FPGA PLC providers for South Korean nuclear power plants, Doosan HF Controls (HFC) has implemented FPGA-oriented controllers and I/O cards for safety I&C systems. These PLC's have been installed and operated in South Korea nuclear power plants. Some of these PLC's are developed for new systems and some of these PLC's are developed for retrofit. All the FPGA components on these PLC's were released in accordance with HFC internal procedures which are comparable to industry standards for safety software. In this paper, HFC software and hardware development lifecycle that is consistent with regulation and industry standards are presented. Then HFC FPGA applications in the nuclear safety digital I&C are illustrated. Next, HFC FPGA latest applications and development in the nuclear I&C are highlighted. In the conclusion, summaries of the processes and HFC FPGA development experience are presented to foster communications among PLC suppliers in the application of FPGA in the nuclear industry.
