The paper presents the general formulation of sensitivity problem for the continuous design variable distribution performed in the scope of variational calculus. The variations of kinematic and static field components are defined by means of functionals involving Dirac delta function. The state equations of the problem are incorporated into functions by means of Lagrange multipliers vector. The determination of first variations of kinematic and static field components due to variations of the design variables vector resulted in necessity of the solution of differential equation for Lagrange multipliers vector. The analysis of the obtained lagrange multipliers components indicates type of load/kinematic distortions required to be imposed on the adjoint structure. Implementation of this information in sensitivity analysis resulted in determination of underintegral sensitivity operators associated with each component of the design variable vector. The results of sensitivity analysis of steel piles embedded in homogeneous soil are used in rational simulation of nonhomogeneous soils surrounding pile structure.
