Low carbon MgO-C refractories with and without ZnO were prepared and the influence of ZnO addition on the oxidation resistance of the materials was investigated. The phase evolution, open porosity and cold compression strength of the materials were analyzed with in-situ spinel formation in the matrix of the materials with and without ZnO.The relationship between in-situ spinel formation with the presence of ZnO in the matrixes were explored with assistance of thermodynamic analysis. The oxidation resistance was discussed with respect to the dense layer formed between decarburized layer and original layer
