As the HDD industry continues to extend the state-of-the-art as to drilled length and diameter, there is increasing use of large diameter drill pipe and downhole tools. As these tools are pushed to their limit, failures are occurring due to metal fatigue. It is estimated that on a worldwide basis, fatigue causes approximately 80% of downhole failures. The oilfield has developed innovative standards to keep pace with advancements in horizontal drilling. Standard DS-1~® was developed with the help of 36 sponsor companies. DS-1 addresses manufacturing, string design, and inspection. DS-1 can benefit HDD contractors by establishing standards in metallurgical and dimensional requirements, design and operating methodology, inspection of components, and quality control. This can benefit the HDD industry by maximizing tool life and reducing failures of string components.
