The rebuild of Imperial Sugar's Port Wentworth refinery provided a unique opportunity to design and build one of the safest and most efficient sugar packaging and material handling facilities utilizing the best available technology.. The Refinery rebuild was initiated with the wet sugar material handling system and continued through granulation, silo storage/conditioning, bulk loading and the complete packaging facility through the finished goods warehouse. The rebuild included the installation of state of the art equipment sourced world wide including a granulator, a vertical cooler, sixteen dense phase material handling systems, three silos and a complete new packaging system. Safety was the primary design criteria and all systems design was initially evaluated from the perspective of creating a safe work environment. The material handling design utilizes dense phase systems, rotary airlocks and other methods as isolation devices. All of the dry sugar equipment was equipped with a variety of sensors and warning devices to maintain safe operating parameters. Explosion suppression systems and/or explosion venting systems were installed throughout the material handling systems and are connected to the life safety systems as additional protection. The packaging facility was designed to create a safe and clean working environment while maximizing throughput and efficiencies.. The elimination of vertical surfaces, extensive dust collection system and sloped floor design create an environment for maintaining housekeeping standards.
