While most other unit operations have moved to continuous operation, refined sugar pan boiling is generally conducted in batch pans. The vertical continuous pan at United Sugar refinery in Jeddah has been successfully operating since 2007. It is possible to compare batch pan operation with continuous pan operation, as both systems operate in parallel. Generally speaking, the merits of a continuous process over a batch process are follows: 1. Better plant utilization 2. Higher operating and energy efficiency 3. Simpler process control This paper examines the performance of the Jeddah continuous pan on the basis of: 1. Design Features 2. Heat and Mass Transfer 3. Operating Experience 4. Crystal Size Distribution 5. Sugar Quality 6. Fouling and Encrustation 7. Instrumentation and Control.
