ASSESSMENT OF CONSERVATISM IN THE SEPARATION OF VARIABLES APPROACH TO SEISMIC PROBABILISTIC RISK ASSESSMENT

Seismic failure probabilities of nonstructural components in an auxiliary building are evaluated. The seismic response of the nonstructural components are calculated from time history analysis using a suite of ground motions. The responses (loads) of the components are compared to the probabilistic capacity functions in order to estimate the failure probabilities and the uncertainties. In addition, the loads on essentially identical equipment at two different levels of the building under the same seismic shaking are evaluated, and their joint failure probabilities are estimated.
