Tropical Depression 02a started in the Northern Indian Ocean on 2nd June 2007 and progressed up to a Category 5 storm named Gonu, offshore of the eastern' tip of Oman. This storm was the strongest tropical cyclone recorded in the Arabian Sea and unique in that it progressed up the Gulf of Oman, a trajectory that had not previously been observed in the period of record. The storm proceeded toward the coast of Oman but remained approximately 100km offshore of Muscat by which time it had been downgraded to a Category 1 storm, with winds of 65-80 knots.
