The Design and Performance of a Detached Breakwater and Beach Recharge in a Crenulate Bay: A Case Study Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland

During the summer of 2007 a detached breakwater and beach recharge scheme was built at Newbiggin Bay in Northumberland. This paper describes the background to the project and the techniques used to design the scheme. Particular emphasis is given to the sizing and positioning of the breakwater to create a stable beach. The uncertainty inherent in this type of scheme and the need to adapt to future changes are discussed.
