Expansion of Jebel Ali Port

Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, UAE, is the largest man-made harbor in the world. In order to accommodate anticipated growth in containerized and other types of cargo, DP World (DPW), owner and operator of the port, retained Halcrow in 2004 to develop a Master Plan for expansion of the port to the year 2030. Due to the massive scale of the proposed expansion, and in order to ensure that it would not negatively impact the environment and the existing and planned marine infrastructure in its vicinity, DPW also commissioned Halcrow to prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the phased expansion. As part of the EIA effort, extensive hydrodynamic numerical modeling was carried out to evaluate the potential impact of the expansion on the adjacent marine infrastructure such as the extensive array of seawater intakes for a large aluminum smelter and power/ desalination plants.
