This paper attempts to extend design methods for overtopped coastal structures. Rather than relying on the nebulous descriptions for allowable overtopping discharges (e.g., "well-protected" crest and rear slope) cited in most references (e.g., EurOTop (2007)), mechanistic/quantitative design methods are advanced. The approach here is to compute the wave overtopping velocities and flow depths over the seaward face, crest, and rear slope (Shuttrumpf et al 2002, Van Gent 2002, Bosman et al, 2008).
