One Hundred and Beyond: Using Shoreline Management Plans

The Shoreline Management (SMP) process was started some 15 years ago with the growing understanding that a more integrated approach was needed in management of flood and coastal erosion risk; particularly in the face of increased use of the coastal zone, a greater awareness of coastal interaction and the threat of climate change. While it had always been appreciated, at least in concept, that management of defence at the coast needed a broad perspective, implementation of this could be hampered by administrative boundaries and by a focus on solving the immediate local scale problems.
