The extension to the Port of Gijon is one of the most important works carried out in Spain in the last few years and is a great challenge for maritime engineering, both for the severe climatic conditions and the tight deadline to address European Funds financial guidelines. In this paper we have summarized some of the most innovative planning tools and procedures used to accomplish it, such as the weather forecast system developed, a maritime advance stability assessment methodology, the development of a sinking procedure for big caissons in open waters, and some safety proceedings introduced. Relying on all the above, 3,8 km of exterior breakwater in deep waters have been completed in four summer campaigns.
