INVESTIGATION ON VARIABILITY OF CROSS SECTIONAL AREA OF ELECTRICALLY CORRODED REINFORCING BAR

The structural (load-bearing) performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams or columns is supposed to decrease due to corrosion of reinforcing bars. According to previous study, the structural performance of RC members did not decrease only due to the average of cross sectional loss of reinforcing bars but also due to local corrosion. It is important to investigate the variability of the remaining cross sectional area of corroded reinforcing bars. In this paper, authors have conducted accurate investigations concerning corrosion level and the local cross sectional area of corroded bars in RC specimens. The RC specimens were made as part of a benchmark test by separate seven universities or research institutes, in order to study the accidental variability of their structural performance. A three-dimensional shape scanning method of corroded bars was applied to measure corroded bars, in addition to the conventional measuring method using a calliper and the gravimetric method. The variety of corrosion may be supposed to become larger as corrosion proceeds, however, the investigation results showed that the variability of the standard deviation of the cross sectional loss, not the standard deviation itself, becomes larger as corrosion proceeds.
