MAJOR PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT AS AN ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE

What does it take to manage the new generation of mega-projects? Major programme management (MPM) has been argued to be an emerging professional discipline that integrates project management with a range of inter-organisational disciplines. This paper presents some preliminary evidence from a co-operative inquiry into the knowledge and skills required for successfully managing major programmes and major programme management as a professional identity. Major programme management requires strategic skills such as financial and stakeholder management that are not associated with traditional project management, but it is not clear yet whether major programme management will emerge as a distinct professional identity.
