TOWARDS A MORE SOCIALLY AWARE APPROACH WITH DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

In response to calls for a more socially aware analysis of the decision making processes, this paper introduces a qualitative research stance through a behavioral approach to developing knowledge-based decision support systems (KBDSS) solutions. These solutions are designed to assist in the integration of science-based knowledge to enhance practical and operational decision making. The user behavioral approach is demonstrated through a domain specific DSS (Decision Support Systems) development example using a problem context from the northern Australian dairy industry. The Australian dairy industry in the region under study is facing challenges from a new payment system that is driven by both the quality and quantity of milk. To address the needs of dairy farm businesses in their operational decision making, the proposed DSS solution incorporates the two essential behavioral perspectives of knowledge seeking and knowledge contribution in the DSS solution development. An example of the approach is shown to demonstrate the methodological and empirical findings.
