South Korean Initiative on Multi-National Nuclear Power Infrastructure Development Education Program for New Comer States

Many countries have expressed a strong interest in the introduction of nuclear power to curtail greenhouse gas emissions and raise living standards. It is challenging to build a healthy national infrastructure needed for the first nuclear power plant. One of the best ways to overcome the complexity is by supplementing the IAEA's program, sharing experiences through a comprehensive training program. An education program for peaceful nuclear power infrastructure development has been created based on IAEA's infrastructure guideline and the last 50 years Korean experience on nuclear power. The first International Seminar on Nuclear Power Infrastructure Development (NUPID) was held in Ulaanbaatar during May 4-8, 2009 with the support of Korea, Mongolia as well as the IAEA. NUPID-2011 was designed to provide participants with guidelines and milestones to establish the national infrastructure for nuclear power program. In addition, the seminar included a new part to cover the technology and infrastructure for nuclear fuel industry that can fit Mongolia's immediate agenda. NUPID-2011 can contribute to advancing newcomer states understanding and promoting cooperation among Asian experts in nuclear industry and institutions as well as academia. By multinational extension of the course, NUPID program will pave the way to the safe development of peaceful and sustainable nuclear energy.
