TRAFFIC CONGESTION-RELATED ATTITUDES AND SEGMENTS OFTRAVELERS IN SHANGHAI, CHINA

摘要

It is more and more important to understand and improve travelers’ feeling and behaviorunder the traffic congestion situation, besides just to improve transportation capacity orplanning. As known from prior studies, traffic congestions may affect people’s travelrelated decision and behavior, travelers’ attitudes and preference will make people feeland act differently under the same situation. A study was conducted to investigate theimpact of traffic congestion on travelers and their reactions to congestion, which issupported by National Natural Science Foundation of China. A survey was carried out tocollect traveler’s attitudes and travel-related behavior under the congestion situation. Thispaper presents the early results based on the survey data relevant to estimate travelers’feeling about congestion and their reaction to congestion. A factor analysis was used toobtain traffic congestion-related attitude factors. Then a cluster analysis was implementedto divide the users into different segments based on their attitudinal variables. To ourknowledge, it is a novelty research point which is based on traveler’s attitude andbehavior in transportation research area in China, and may provide more information tohelp Chinese government or other transportation organizations better understand travelers,especially under the situation of traffic congestions.
