Case Study: Automation and Standardization for a Public Utility

This paper discusses the architecture deployment performed by one of the largest USmunicipal utilities, which created an integration, reporting and analysis platform to address thegrowing demands for greater cost accountability and government reporting.This organization serves millions of residents and businesses. The utility’s water engineering andtechnical services (WETS) division uses their capital improvement program management system(CIPMS) to oversee and manage a ten-year capital water system program consisting of over 100projects with a projected cost of several billion dollars.Topics covered in this paper include:1. Integration across disparate systems to facilitate budgeting, forecasting, performancemanagement and earned value management2. Standardization of processes and templates across the water system3. Efficient compliance with tracking projects necessary to meet regulatory requirements as setforth by the state’s Department of Public Health.
