A virtual sound barrier is used to reduce noise around a passenger head in a train compartment. The effects of local control and of global control are compared using the simulations, where it is found that the local active control is preferable in terms of frequency range of large reductions. Then the effects of the locations of error sensors and control sources on the performance of the active control system are investigated. It is found that when the control sources and the error sensors are placed at the appropriate locations, the upper frequency of noise reduction can be up to 470 Hz. This demonstrates that it is feasible to achieve a wide frequency range of noise reduction in the quiet zone of a train compartment.
