22.2 multichannel sound system and its home reproduction

22.2 multichannel is an advanced sound system realizing three-dimensional sound based on the extension of two-channel stereo. It has three vertical layers with nine, ten, and three channels in the top, middle, and bottom layers, respectively. It also has two low-frequency effects (LFE) channels to create enhanced sound impression. The number of channels and corresponding loudspeaker positions are decided to satisfy the requirements for producing three-dimensional spatial impressions of sound. Then, sound engineers can show their expertise in creating immersive three-dimensional sound with this sound system. In this paper, we review some experimental results that support the 22.2 multichannel format. We also describe a new conversion method between multichannel sound signals to introduce such a three-dimensional sound into homes. The subjective evaluation revealed that eight loudspeakers are appropriate to reproduce 22.2 multichannel sound in the home using the conversion method.
